CRDEUL in Focus

Editor’s Feature
By Robert F. Copeland, Center Points editor

As is the norm, the academic year is racing by as I prepare another issue of the CRDEUL e-Newsletter . These last few months have been filled with activities here in the CRDEUL offices.

I enjoyed being part of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium Conference on Saturday, January 15. It was a very cold morning to get out of bed at 5 a.m., but the conference was a huge success, based on all the feedback we received. Unfortunately, heavy snows in some sections of the state and wind-chills of more than 25 below zero kept almost half of the registered audience from attending that day. The fact that over 100 people did attend this event shows just how hardy we Minnesotans are.

The new weekly CRDEUL Coffeehouse discussions which were started during the 2004 fall semester have continued spring semester. The reports, articles, and timely research are discussed in a relaxed, "coffeehouse" atmosphere in the CRDEUL offices, with dim lighting, music, food, tea, and, of course, coffee. A sampling of what has been discussed this semester includes the University's "Strategic Positioning Report" facilitated by GC Associate Dean Dan Detzner, "Who's Goals? Whose Aspirations?" facilitated by CRDEUL Advisory Board member Irene Duranczyk, and "Increased Stratification of Opportunity in Higher Education" facilitated by CRDEUL Faculty Advisor David Arendale.

Our CRDEUL Monthly Forum series has been well received again this year. In November, the forum was titled "Four Perspectives on Improving Access and Retention in Higher Education: A Celebration of the New CRDEUL Monograph." The featured panelists included Christine Swanson from the College of Liberal Arts, and Leon Hsu, Carl Chung, Catherine Wambach, Irene Duranczyk, Jeanne Higbee, and Susan Staats from General College . The December forum was titled "Multicultural Education: What General College Students Think-A Report on Student Responses to the Map It Questionnaire." Featured panelists at that forum were Jeanne Higbee, Patrick Burch, and Kwabena Siaka of General College . In February, the forum was "Video Games as Tools for Educators" which was presented by Brock Dubbels, a language arts teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools. The March forum was presented by Irene Duranczyk and Don Opitz of General College and was titled "Student Voices in Curricular Transformation."

And finally, making all of our lives easier in the CRDEUL Office is our new student employee, Miguel Vargaas. Miguel is in his final year at the University of Minnesota and is majoring in film studies. He has been able to provide us with 20 hours a week of very badly needed support. Thank you, Miguel.
