CRDEUL’s History: A Timeline of Events
I must admit that I can’t list every event of significance to the center over the years, as I’ve been here only four of its nearly twelve years in existence. I have had to rely on what documentation was available in the files for some of this timeline.
The following timeline chronicles significant milestones
in the history of CRDEUL:
1996: CRDEUL is founded by the General College of the
University of Minnesota. Dana Britt Lundell is hired as the
first employee of the center at the time of its founding,
and is soon after named CRDEUL’s permanent Director.
October 1999: CRDEUL organizes a national conference,
the “First Intentional Meeting on Future Directions in
Developmental Education,” and publishes its proceedings.
2000: CRDEUL publishes the research report,
African American Men From Hennepin County at the University
of Minnesota, 1994-98: Who Applies, Who is Accepted, Who
Attends?
2001: Theoretical Perspectives for Developmental
Education is published as the first issue in CRDEUL’s
monograph series.
April 2001: CRDEUL organizes its next national
conference, the “Second Meeting on Future Directions in
Developmental Education,” and publishes its proceedings.
2002: Histories of Developmental Education is
published as the second issue in CRDEUL’s monograph series.
September 2002: CRDEUL hosts the forum “Uncertain
Welcome: Student Perspectives on Disability and
Postsecondary Education,” presented by Judy Fox and Bobbi
Cordano.
2002: CRDEUL partners in the production of two
training videos as part of the Curriculum Transformation and
Disability (CTAD) grant: Assistive Technology:
Applications in Postsecondary Education, and
Uncertain Welcome: Student Perspectives on Disability and
Postsecondary Education.
October 2002: CRDEUL hosts the forum “The New
Certificate Program in Postsecondary Education,” featuring
presenters Thomas Brothen, Terry Collins, Jeanne Higbee,
Laura Coffin Koch, Thomas Reynolds, and Catherine Wambach.
2002: Exploring Urban Literacy & Developmental
Education is published as the third issue in CRDEUL’s
monograph series.
November 2002: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Multicultural
Awareness Project for Institutional Transformation (MAP-IT)”
with Karen Miksch, Jeanne Higbee, Patrick Bruch, Dana
Lundell, and Rashné Jehangir.
February 2003: CRDEUL hosts the forum “The Politics
and Future of Developmental Education,” with panelists David
Arendale, Jeanne Higbee, and members of the CRDEUL Advisory
Board.
2003: CRDUEL publishes the educational assessment
tool, Multicultural Awareness Project for Institutional
Transformation (MAP IT).
March 2003: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Academic Support
Programs for Native Americans in Selected Institutions in
New Mexico,” presented by Gretchen Starks-Martin of St.
Cloud State University.
April 2003: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Reading Between
the Lines: The Politics of Reading in College and the
Community,” featuring Brock Dubbels, Ezra Hyland, Susan
Nemitz, and Rosemarie Park.
2003: Multiculturalism in Developmental Education
is published as the fourth issue in CRDEUL’s monograph
series.
September 2003: CRDEUL hosts the forum “Are U In or
Are U Out? Implications of Affirmative Action for Higher
Education,” presented by Karen Miksch, Carol Chomsky, and
Mark Rotenberg.
October 2003: CRDEUL hosts the forum “Strengthening
the Bridge to College: Commanding English Outreach to High
School Students,” featuring Faiza Aziz, Margaret Delehanty-Kelly,
Barbara Hodne, Robin Murie, and a student panel.
2003: CRDEUL publishes the book, Curriculum
Transformation and Disability: Implementing Universal Design
in Higher Education.
December 2003: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Developing
Community: Teaching and Advising in General College Learning
Communities,” with panelists Patrick Bruch, Pat James,
Rashné Jehangir, Amy Lee, Dana Lundell, and Bruce Schelske.
February 2004: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “The Minnesota
Point of View in Counseling Psychology and the Founding of
General College,” presented by Thomas Brothen and Cathrine
Wambach.
2004: CRDEUL publishes the resource guide,
Bibliography of Resources for Multicultural Higher Education.
Spring 2004: CRDEUL publishes the first issue of its
biennial electronic newsletter, later titled CenterPoints.
April 2004: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “College
Readiness and the Assessment Conundrum,” presented by Susan
Hipp of Century College.
2004: Best Practices for Access and Retention in
Higher Education is published as the fifth issue in
CRDEUL’s monograph series.
September 2004: CRDEUL hosts the forum “The Grand
Re-Opening of The Center For Research on Developmental
Education and Urban Literacy,” with Dana Lundell, Jeanne
Higbee, David Arendale, Kwabena Siaka, and Robert Copeland.
November 2004: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Four
Perspectives on Improving Access and Retention in Higher
Education: A Celebration of the New CRDEUL Monograph,”
featuring chapter authors Christine Swanson, Leon Hsu, Carl
Chung, Cathrine Wambach, Irene Duranczyk, Jeanne Higbee, and
Susan Staats.
November 2004: CRDEUL starts its series of
Coffeehouse Discussions, that ran regularly through 2006.
Sample topics include; “Student Engagement: Pathways to
Collegiate Success,” the “University’s Strategic Positioning
Report,” “Increased Stratification of Opportunity in Higher
Education,” and “Voluntary Participation and Student
Motivation: Increasing Both for Higher Student Outcomes.”
December 2004: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Multicultural
Education: What General College Students Think—A Report on
Student Responses to the MAP IT Questionnaire,” featuring
Jeanne Higbee, Patrick Bruch, and Kwabena Siaka.
2005: CRDEUL hosts the statewide educators
conference, “Building Bridges for Access and Success from
High School to College,” and publishes its proceedings.
February 2005: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Video Games
as Tools for Educators,” presented by Brock Dubbels.
March 2005: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Student Voices
in Curricular Transformation,” with Irene Duranczyk and Don
Opitz.
April 2005: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Future
Directions in General College: Teaching, Research, and
Practice” with panelists Jeanne Higbee, Dana Lundell, David
Arendale, Pat James, Thomas Brothen, Dean David Taylor, and
General College Vision book co-authors.
2005: CRDEUL publishes the book, The General
College Vision: Integrating Intellectual Growth,
Multicultural Perspectives, and Student Development.
September 2005: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Celebrating
the General College Vision: A New Book and A New Future,”
featuring Jeanne Higbee, Dana Lundell, David Arendale,
Thomas Brothen, Catherine Wambach, Patricia James, Susan
Staats, Mary Ellen Shaw, Irene Duranczyk, Donald Opitz, and
student co-author Leah Woodstrom.
October 2005: CRDEUL hosts the forum, “Student
Identity and How it Affects Motivation and Engagement,”
presented by Brock Dubbels.
November 2005: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “A Shift From
Culturally Relevant to Culturally Responsive Teaching,”
presented by Gretchen Starks Martin of St. Cloud State
University.
2006: Student Standpoints About Access Programs in
Higher Education is published as the sixth issue in
CRDEUL’s monograph series.
March 2006: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Implementing
Universal Design: Resources for Faculty and Staff,” with
panelists Jeanne Higbee, Heidi Barajas, Emily Goff, Dana
Lundell, and Roberta Cordano.
April 2006: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Developing Your
Ideas for Publication in APA Style: Resources for
Professionals and Graduate Students,” with Dana Lundell and
Jeanne Higbee.
Summer 2006: General College is closed by the
University of Minnesota. Many GC faculty and programs are
merged into the (new) College of Education and Human
Development as the Department of Postsecondary Teaching and
Learning. CRDEUL enters CEHD as a collegewide center.
October 2006: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Using MAP IT:
Multicultural Awareness Project for Institutional
Transformation and Its Implementation,” with Karen Miksch,
Jeanne Higbee, David Ghere, and Dana Lundell.
November 2006: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Podcasting in
Higher Education: Exploring its Uses in Professional
Development and the Classroom,” presented by David Arendale.
December 2006: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “El Salvador:
Photography’s Power to Heal” presented by Laurie McGinley.
February 2007: CRDUEL director Dana Lundell is
informed by CEHD Dean Darlyne Bailey, that there is “no
future” for the Center in CEHD.
February 2007: CRDEUL hosts a forum on PASS IT:
Integrating Universal Instructional Design into the
Postsecondary Curriculum, with Jeanne Higbee and Emily
Goff.
March 2007: CRDEUL hosts a forum on “Building
Partnerships Through Urban Literacy Initiatives: What Are We
Doing, and Where Are We Going?” featuring Ezra Hyland,
Rosemary Miller, Robin Murie, and Heidi Barajas.
April 2007: Dana Lundell submits her resignation to
CEHD Dean Darlyne Bailey, along with an operating budget to
fulfill CRDEUL’s obligations through June 2008.
June 2007: Jeanne Higbee assumes the role of Interim
Director of CRDEUL during its “sunset” year.
June 8, 2007: Open House in CRDEUL offices for Dana
Lundell’s last day as director and as a University employee.
2007: Diversity and the Postsecondary Experience
is published as the seventh and final issue in CRDEUL’s
monograph series.
November 2007: CRDEUL hosts the forum “Learning by
Design: Games, Play and Structuring Classroom Learning for
Reflection and High Engagement,” presented by Brock Dubbels.
March 2008: Pedagogy and Student Services for
Institutional Transformation: Implementing Universal Design
in Higher Education, CRDEUL’s final book, is published
as a collaboration between CRDEUL and the PASS IT grant.
June 2008:CenterPoints electronic Newsletter,
Volume 5, Issue 1, comes out as the final publication of the
center.
June 30, 2008: CRDEUL closes its doors.
The number of conferences to which CRDUEL’s director and advisors have been invited to share their knowledge over the years is impossible to list in its entirety, as are the schools, libraries, research centers and educators with which the center has worked along the way. CRDEUL’s outreach is summed up in its mission statement:
- “The Center for Research on Developmental Education and Urban Literacy (CRDEUL) at the University of Minnesota promotes and develops multidisciplinary and multicultural theory, research, and practice in postsecondary developmental education and urban literacy.”
