Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exam (MTLE)
All candidates for Minnesota teaching licensure are required to pass a series of Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE).
These tests are offered several times a year and students are responsible for registering for and taking the tests by the required deadlines.
Tests
Basic Skills Test
All teacher licensure candidates are required to take the basic skills test. This test needs to be completed before you begin the M.Ed. licensure program.
This test includes three subtests: reading, writing, and mathematics. We recommend that you take all three subtests at a single appointment.

Pedagogy Tests
You'll need to take the pedagogy test the corresponds with your licensure grade-level:
- Early Childhood (Birth to Grade 3)
- Elementary (Grades K–6)
- Secondary (Grades 5–12)
Each pedagogy test includes two subtests. We recommend that you take both subtests at a single appointment.
The pedagogy exam should be completed during your student teaching practicum.
Note: Testing for K–12 and Special Education Licensure Candidates
K–12 licensure candidates in the areas of art education, music education, physical education, and second languages and cultures may choose to take either the elementary or the secondary pedagogy exam.
Special education candidates will need to take the pedagogy exam that corresponds with their specialty area:
- Early Childhood Special Education: early childhood exam
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing: choose one of the three pedagogy tests (early childhood, elementary, or secondary)
- EBD, LD, DD: choose either the elementary or the secondary exam.
Content Tests
You'll need to take the content test that corresponds to your licensure area.
All tests except elementary education include two subtests. Elementary education content tests include three subtests. We recommend that you take all subtests at a single appointment.

Register for Tests
Getting Test Results
Make sure to select the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities as a recipient institution of your MTLE scores. Also, save a copy of your official MTLE test report as a PDF document. It will be your responsibility to safeguard your official scores.
