About Me
I have been an academic adviser since 2006. Before then I worked for eleven years as a university lecturer, for four years as a classroom teacher/poet-in-residence in high schools, and for six of those years I also served as a teacher trainer. I spent twelve plus years in Japan as a teacher and researcher.
My academic background and experience is in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), world literatures, creative writing, disability rights, and intercultural awareness education. I have a B.A. in English literature (University of Minnesota), an M.F.A. in creative writing (University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa), and post-graduate certificates in educational technologies (University of British Columbia, Vancouver) and disability policy and services (University of Minnesota). I am especially interested in how societies can build more inclusive learning communities, where people from all backgrounds and abilities feel valued and empowered.
I enjoy sharing free time with my eight-year-old son, Taiyo, and my husband, Andre, and I also still enjoy writing poems and flash fiction whenever I can.
My goal as your academic adviser is to be fully supportive of your professional and personal development and to encourage you to consider the many rich opportunities available to you at the University of Minnesota. I am hopeful that you, as a future educator and youth worker, will grow into a responsible, engaged lifelong learner who will share, as a culturally- and globally-competent citizen, your strengths and skills with the world.
I look forward to working with you!
Rebecca
