CEHD Technology Fees
Undergraduate and graduate students admitted to the College of Education and Human Development are assessed a technology fee of $130 per semester if taking six or more credits, and $60 per semester if registered for two or more credits, but fewer than six credits. No fee is assessed on students taking fewer than two credits.
The purpose of student technology fees is to enhance the academic experience of students through the use of technology. Technology fees paid by students, along with departmental and University fiscal support, help:
- maintain and expand classroom computer labs and classroom multimedia facilities,
- support instructors’ use of technology in their classes through the Instructional Technology (IT) Fellowship Program,
- hire staffing to support and facilitate production of educational multimedia and distance learning materials,
- staff the CEHD Academic Technology Services office, and
- fund other college technology projects.
Maintain and expand classroom computer labs
College students gain access to specialized classroom computer labs through courses using these labs and open lab time provided outside of class. Technology fees pay to purchase and upgrade computers, and to provide technical support and management of the following classroom computer labs:
- 325 Peik Hall (Minneapolis)
- 355 Peik Hall (Minneapolis)
- 141 Mariucci Arena (Minneapolis)
Departmental funding
All CEHD departments receive funding from technology fees to enhance learning opportunities for students. Funds are allocated to each department based on enrollment (how many students are enrolled in programs in a department) and instruction (student credit hours taught within a department) figures. For the last three years, fees have been used to:
- purchase classroom projection/presentation systems,
- purchase multimedia data carts for large classes taught in different buildings,
- purchase software used in computer classrooms
- many other projects
Instructional Technology (IT) Fellows to support the use of technology in teaching and learning
College instructors are supported in their use of technology for teaching and learning through the Instructional Technology (IT) Fellowship Program. IT Fellows are graduate students trained to:
- support faculty in learning new skills required to use technology in the classroom and online via WebCT or Moodle, or other centrally supported technologies, and
- provide on-demand trouble shooting support for instructors
All college departments have at least one half-time IT Fellow to support faculty and staff within that department.
Academic Technology Development Project Initiative
In January 2007, Academic Technology Services spearheaded a new process for initiating academic technology development projects in the college. All instructors are now invited to submit a proposal for technology-driven development projects that will further the growth of academic technology in the college. In 2007 and 2008, nearly 100 project proposals were submitted by instructors for development.
