Multicultural Teacher Development Project

A teacher preparation program designed for people of color.

Students in a classroom
“It’s important to have someone you can look up to in your own culture and background.” —Sue Vang,
former MTDP student

We'll show you what it takes to be a great teacher. And help you get there. When you walk into a classroom as a teacher, you have the power to change people’s lives. Change them by sharing your experiences, your perspective, your knowledge. That not only fosters learning, it creates a new sense of real understanding.

The Multicultural Teacher Development Project (MTDP) can help you make that difference. That’s because the Multicultural Teacher Development Project was designed to prepare students of culturally diverse backgrounds to be exceptional teachers.

You’ll be more than a teacher. You’ll be a role model.

By virtue of your heritage, you’ll be bringing an important cultural aspect to the classroom. One that offers unique perspectives and innate common ground which can add both inspiration and understanding to your education process. The Multicultural Teacher Development Project strives to foster your own strengths and life experiences, helping to cultivate your own special teaching skills and style. So you’ll be fully equipped to stand as an example, providing your unique brand of knowledge and wisdom to students in the coming years.

An MTDP scholarship can help get you with the program. And keep you there.

As a participant in the Multicultural Teacher Development Project through the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development, you’ll have access to a scholarship fund awarded to students of color enrolled full-time in a master of education (M.Ed.)/initial licensure program. This includes a one-time scholarship award of up to $5,000.

Mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and a soft place to land.

As a student in the Multicultural Teacher Development Project, you’ll never feel alone. That’s because you’ll have a personal mentor to offer support, help you meet other students with same interests, offer networking, help create a sense of community, and, most importantly, offer a listening ear whenever you need advice. It’s all a part of what makes MTDP the perfect place to realize your education hopes and dreams.

The University of Minnesota offers more opportunity, more resources, and more ways to get ahead.
