Undergraduate leadership minor

In collaboration with the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute and the University's Office for Student Affairs, the Department of Educational Policy and Administration offers an undergraduate minor in leadership. The 16-credit minor is interdisciplinary, multidimensional, experiential, and multi-intercultural; and includes three core courses, a field experience, and elective courses.

The core courses are the following:

EDPA 1301/PA 1961—Personal Leadership in the University;

EDPA 3301/PA 3961—Leadership, You, and Your Community;

EDPA 3402/PA 3971—Field Experience

EDPA 4303/PA 4961—Leadership in the World

(See www.umn.edu/lead/minor/ for details about the courses and for examples of elective courses.)

The leadership minor includes core classes that introduce leadership theory, analyze the characteristics of leaders, and examine leadership in the context of social change and citizenship. With small, interactive classes, students receive individual attention from their instructors and related closely with their classmates. With a variety of learning experiences, ranging from classroom work to group activities and real life experience outside the classroom, students discover a range of opportunities to learn and to practice their knowledge.

In the leadership minor, students examine their own learning and leading styles, considering their personal values and experiences in the context of other cultures, perspectives, and leadership paradigms. As students supplement their leadership classes with elective courses, they learn to apply their personal leadership skills, discover the role of leadership in their lives, and prepare to become engaged and active citizens.

This program was selected by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) as one of only 10 programs nationally and internationally to be described as "Exemplary" in NASPA's annual publication. Those selected serve as a model for other institutions striving to provide innovative and effective educational services to students.
