Profile
My professional career has been focused on international and intercultural
education. I first became interested in these issues while serving as a U.S.
Peace Corps volunteer English teacher in Turkey (1965-1967). Ever since that
time I have focused my professional work as an educator and researcher on
questions regarding intercultural learning, the nature and impact of
intercultural experiences (at home and abroad), the development of intercultural
skills, intercultural education and training, and the internationalization of
education. At the heart of my inquiries is a deep interest in how human beings
experience difference and diversity, and how those understandings frame their
behavior. I am passionately committed to providing our students with an
education that supports the development of their intercultural competence and
their ability to work in diverse environments. This is in addition to providing
the best intellectual and research preparation possible.
Since 1977, I have been at the University of Minnesota.
For the first 16 years, I held a joint appointment as an
international student adviser/associate director of the
International Student and Scholar Services office and as a
faculty member in the College of Education and Human
Development. Since 1991, I have been a full time faculty
member.
I am one of the three founders of the
comparative and international development education (CIDE)
program, which began in 1986 and has grown to become the
internationally recognized program that it is today. It has
been enormously gratifying to help create and develop CIDE,
work with our wonderful students over the years, and watch
them move on to positions of prominence in their own
careers.
During the past 15 years, much of my research and applied
work has been in the area of study abroad.
Gerry Fry and I are currently working
on the SAGE project which is looking at the ways in which
study abroad returnees become globally engaged throughout
their lives and the importance of study abroad on those
activities. [See

Immediate Impact: Study Abroad for Global Engagement (SAGE)]
It has been an exciting project and we now have a large data
base of 6,391 respondents who studied abroad between 1960
and 2007. We have interviewed over 60 of them.
In almost all of our research, we seek to involve our
students as research assistants and to publish with them. We
often work together with other faculty members as well on
these research projects. Please see the link to my work
during the past 10 years which shows the projects I’ve
directed and provides summary information about them.
