Administration of community and alternative education programs

Begins spring 2004!

Unique to the University of Minnesota, this innovative cohort program is designed to meet the needs of students pursuing director of community education licensure endorsement or training leading to principal endorsement for those specializing in alternative education programs such as alternative learning centers, charter schools, day treatment facilities, etc.

The licensing and leadership development program for educational administrators can help you achieve endorsement for a director of community education or principal license, offered through the Department of Educational Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota.

Opportunities exist across the state of Minnesota for licensed directors of community education and principals/directors of alternative settings. Minnesota is one of the first and only states to recognize the significant contributions and challenges of quality community education programming by elevating the position of Director to one that requires licensure. In order to meet the preparation requirements for this positions, the licensure program offers a cohort experience for the attainment of the knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to this role. The University of Minnesota offered the state's first cohort for community education directors under the current licensing regulations and is committed to continuing high-level training for this important field.

Minnesota is also a leader in the belief for providing quality education for each child. As a result, multiple alternative options for education have emerged such as alternative learning centers, charter schools, academic programs within treatment facilities, etc. Though the leadership role in these alternative settings reflects the competencies attributed to a principal, some of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required are specific to the setting. Through dynamic input from practitioners leading community education programs and alternative settings, a relevant program for preparing leaders has been developed and will be offered to you through the administration of community and alternative education programs licensure cohort. For more information go to the licensure program website or contact Lynn Scearcy 612-626-8244 (scear001@umn.edu), Ann Werner 612-626-8647 (werne023@umn.edu) or Nuria Sheehan 612-625-9087 (sheeh038@umn.edu).
