Special Topics
EPsy 5200 Special Topics: Psychological
Foundations: Mind, Brain and Education
The course will focus on neuroscience papers of relevance to
education. It will cover topics such as mathematics,
reading, science, intelligence, learning, motivation, social
cognition, emotion, and media understanding. Students will
develop an understanding of what neuroscience has to offer
education, and what education has to offer neuroscience.

Seminars
EPsy 8114 Seminar: Cognition and Learning:
The Psychology of Scientific Reasoning
This course will be based on research in cognitive and
educational psychology that explores the psychology of
scientific reasoning. We will discuss what psychology tells
us about how people think, reason, and make decisions. We
will address questions like, “What does it mean to do
science?, “How do scientists think when they are doing
science?”, and “How well are students at different levels of
cognitive development able to engage in scientific
reasoning?” We will read selected papers from a
philosophical and historical perspective about how science
is done. We will also read several studies from a cognitive
psychology perspective. The overall goal is to understand
the psychological processes involved in scientific reasoning
and to think about how our knowledge of these processes
informs teaching and learning in science classrooms.

EPsy 8117 Writing Empirical Paper and
Research/Grant Proposals in Education and Psychology
Scientific writing skills. Focuses on logic/argumentation.
Each student produces an empirical paper or research
proposal. Breaks down the writing process into components:
one component per week. Each week, students write a section
of their paper/proposal and critique others'.

EPsy 8290 Seminar: Cognition and Learning:
Longitudinal Data II
This course is the sequel of EPsy 8282. The course will
focus on the analysis of non-normal data repeatedly
collected over time including binary data, count data, and
ordered categorical data. Emphasis will be on application
and students will work with real data and gain experience in
using the R statistical software package.
