The emphasis of my professional career has been public
education: as a teacher, school counselor, and associate
professor. As a K-12 school counselor, I became interested in
higher education training programs for school counselors. My
interest continues in that area as I strive to intertwine
reality and theory into school counselor education. My research
interests include the training of school counselors, the
effectiveness of school counselor comprehensive programs in
schools, reducing the achievement gap through effective school
counselor services and programs.
My passion is children, from birth to old
age. Most recently I have been active in grants which involve
placing school counselors in elementary schools in the metro
area. These schools have never had the services of school
counselors prior to the grant; therefore I am closely monitoring
the effectiveness of the services and programs the counselors
deliver. I am also involved in a grant in a high school in the
metro area which creates a school counseling position to help
students be better prepared for post secondary choices. Another
research activity involves a junior high after-school program to
assist low income students in becoming successful students. (See
a recent article about the SOAR
program.)
Working with and for children of all ages
has always been my goal. I have presented at a national and
state conferences on the value of play and humor in groups
at all levels of education. My enthusiasm is for
teaching--providing students the challenge to grow, learn
and become efficient and expert counselors in our schools.
