Employment offers and negotiating salary
You’ve gotten your first job offer, but now what?
Components of the employment offer
When considering one or more employment offers, it is important to consider the entire package, not simply the salary. Components to consider:
- Salary: How much are they offering you? What is the time table for raises or reviews?
- Benefits: What is the monetary equivalent of benefits such as: insurance, vacation and sick days, retirement plans (e.g. Simple IRA, 401K), tuition or professional development, transportation (e.g. bus passes, parking), and bonuses?
- Supervision: Do you feel like you will get the support you need to succeed in this position? Will your supervisor support you in advancement?
- Climate: Does the climate of the work environment appeal to you? Is it fast- or slow-paced, competitive or cooperative?
- Location: How much of your day will be committed to the commute? Are you willing to relocate?
- Job description: Do the requirements of the job appeal to you? Will the position utilize your strengths and education? Are you excited about the work? Are there opportunities for advancement?
