Research & Discovery

Economic Well-being of Diverse Families Residing in the United States:  This research agenda is to understand the economic well-being of diverse families residing in the United States, as a whole, and in Minnesota. Specifically, this research examines economic and management issues that affect individuals and families well being. This research project examines the self-employed versus wage and salary earners, family businesses owners, and financial management issues that affect individuals and families economic well-being.

Family Businesses: Research focuses on the factors at the intersection of the family and business systems that affect the viability of family businesses, especially areas and levels of tension.

Mexican Agricultural Workers in Minnesota: A Study of Transnational Work and Family Issues – This bi-national research and outreach project, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, studies the transnational work and family issues of Mexican agricultural workers in southern Minnesota and their families in Minnesota and Mexico. The goals of the project also include developing faculty and graduate students competencies in cross-cultural and cross-national research methodology and collaboration, developing educational programs for use in the community and in the classroom, and developing public policy related to remittances in the financial services sector.

Rural Families Speak: Tracking the well-being and functioning of rural low-income families in the context of welfare reform. The Minnesota state team is one of 17 state teams working together on this very important societal issue.

Tracking Changes in Minnesota's Diverse Families: Tracking Changes in Quality of Life Among Minnesota's Diverse Families project members are teaming with community leaders from across Minnesota's diverse ethnic and regional groups. They are working to create a research project designed to help better understand diverse family strengths that lead to improvements in quality of life. Families representing five racial/ethnic groups (African American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, and European American) are the focus of the project.

Collaborative Center for the Study of Families in Diverse Contexts: The mission of Center is to better understand family life and strengthen family well-being, for all citizens, especially those who are from culturally, racially and ethnically diverse and often-disadvantaged groups, through discovery, scholarship and public engagement.

Long Term Care Insurance Employee Decision Making: This project focuses on examining individual and family level long-term care risk management decision making processes and outcomes.
