Collaborative Learning Communities
Experts most often deliver educational programs about dementia to families. But families also have much to teach professionals about living day to day with dementia. And persons with dementia know what no one else knows – how it feels to live with the illness.
In Collaborative Learning Communities, we replace static curriculums with dynamic conversations. Those who live with the illness, family members and those who work in the field join together in weekly educational discussions. Everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner.
People living with the illness have knowledge as legitimate as those with advanced academic degrees. Persons with dementia are included in all activities and take a special role in teaching about the lived experience of the illness. Since 1999 the Wayne Caron Family Caregiving Center has used collaborative learning as the core learning activity for all members of our community.
