Connected Families
The Connected Family program was piloted by WCFCC in 2006 and developed by a PhD student in the Department of Family Social Science, Faten Khoury, MA, LMFT. The program aims to enable family members to stay emotionally connected with the person with dementia and other family members in spite of the cognitive impairment. It accomplishes this by reorienting family communication away from intellectual content, and towards the emotional unconscious.
Families engage with material which is presented by a skilled Marriage and Family Therapist. There is time provided in the sessions which for allows families to connect with one another through the different realms of contextual and emotional content. Families are confronted with visual art, music, and dream images and are encouraged to develop skills in connecting and communicating through these media forms.
