The Role of Parents

It’s not just the student experience that has changed; the role of parents has changed as well. In the past, the standard advice for parents of first-year college students was simply, "Let go." College administrators, faculty, parents, and students themselves believed that students needed to choose their own paths, make their own choices, and deal with the consequences if the choices turned out to be wrong.

Today's parents, however, have been told for years that it is important to be involved in their children's lives. They have heard that they should know their children's friends, visit their schools, and be aware of how their children are spending their time outside of school. The message "Let go" rings hollow when parents know that their involvement from pre-school through high school has made a difference in their student's success. They have seen their children achieve goals far beyond what the parents ever set for themselves.
