Undergraduate Students
Program Information
Graduation with a B.S. degree in Family Social Science requires completion of 55-58 credits in the major, Liberal Education requirements, and electives, totaling 120 University credits. Courses in economics, verbal communication, and statistics are required as a preparatory foundation for the major. Major coursework is capped with a four-credit internship in research or field study requiring 180 hours of participation. Students can fulfill their internship requirements on campus, in the Twin Cities, or even abroad through programs sponsored by the Learning Abroad Center.
The University of Minnesota also offers a minor in Family Social Science. The minor, totaling 15 course credits, consists of two required courses and nine elective credits.

Declaring Your Major/Applying to the Program
The Family social science bachelor of science (B.S. degree) program is open to first year applicants. A GPA above 2.80 is preferred for this program for transfer students. To declare your major, learn about transferring into the program, and freshman admissions please visit the College of Education and Human Development's Student Services.
The National Council on Family Relations
(NCFR) requires coursework in ten content areas, these requirements are met by
approved University of Minnesota courses.
NCFR, the only national program to certify family life educators, has approved
the University of Minnesota’s Family Social Science undergraduate program as
meeting the Standards and Criteria required for the Provisional
Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation. NCFR
requires coursework in ten content areas, these requirements are met by
approved University of Minnesota courses.
