Department of Family Social Science

Undergraduate Students

Welcome to the family social science undergraduate program. This multidisciplinary major is a great match for students interested in helping people, developing counseling skills, and understanding human relationships across the lifespan.

After completing extensive coursework in family social science and a rigorous internship, our graduates are well-prepared to work with families in professional environments. Many continue their educations through graduate study in family science or related family programs such as marriage and family therapy or social work.

Our students follow career paths that take them all over the world but they are all committed to one vision: a better future.

Resources for Students: Study Abroad

As an undergraduate student in the Department of Family Social Science, hundreds of study abroad programs are open to you. Imagine assisting a social worker in India who works with street children, or studying how the Australian government supports refugees and immigrants coming from Asia. Complete an internship at a homeless shelter in London, or gather data over the summer for a research paper about family systems in Africa. The learning abroad experience will enhance your academic program and globalize your worldview. In addition, programs are available in almost any language, and many programs are available in English.

Here’s what fellow FSoS students have said about their study abroad experience:

“I worked at a center for homeless and refugee families. I helped teach an English class, run an after school club, and sat in meetings with the social workers and staff! My internship was perfect for me. I was working with parents and their children in a relaxed, intimate yet professional setting. I absolutely loved my work. This program is perfect for someone who is looking to study abroad in another country, that doesn't know another language, that wants to experience a different culture but still be surrounded by Americans. If you do this program, DO an internship.” Emily Schmeig, FSoS undergraduate

"I am currently studying in Toledo, Spain while enrolled in 2 classes which fulfill requirements in FSoS Professional Core, along with classes for my Spanish minor. Before I left for Spain I hadn't thought of doing an internship, but when I arrived there were so many possibilities to work with the local Spaniards that I would be foolish to pass up this opportunity. I work at one of the local libraries teaching English to a group of elementary aged children and another group of teenage girls. I have so much fun creating activities for them while at the same time they help improve my Spanish. I would recommend this program to anyone who is undertaking a Spanish minor or major with their FSoS degree; it's a very fulfilling experience that shouldn't be passed up!"
