Additional Teaching Licensure Programs

These programs allow educators who already hold a state teaching license to add additional areas of state teaching licensure.

Program course requirements may be completed as a specific objective or as part of an advanced degree program.

Beginning July 1, 2012, the application fee for additional licensure programs will increase from $55 to $75.

  • Adult basic education
  • Agricultural education (grades 5-12)
  • Art education
  • Career and technical education
  • Communication arts and literature education (grades 5-12)
  • Computer, Keyboarding and Related Technology Applications (grades K-12)
  • Developmental/adapted physical education [DAPE] (grades preK-12)
  • English as a second language [ESL] (grades K-12)
  • Mathematics education (grades 5-12)
  • Middle level (grades 5-8)
    • communication arts and literature
    • mathematics
    • general science
    • social studies
  • Parent education (parent and family education)
  • Reading (grades K-12)
  • Science education
  • A MN teacher licensed in chemistry, earth and space science, life science, or physics who has taught science for at least three years may take the content knowledge test in another area of science licensure (grades 9-12 only). If the teacher passes the test, he/she is eligible to apply for a teaching license in that licensure field. Please download the full guidelines at the MN Dept. of Education website. Click on "Science Licensure by Test."

    • life science (grades 9-12)
    • physics (grades 9-12)
    • general science (grades 5-8) - Those seeking additional licensure in general science 5-8 will have to take additional coursework through the additional licensure program.

    • deaf or hard of hearing (birth-grade 12)
    • developmental disabilities (grades K-12)
    • emotional/behavioral disorder (grades K-12)
    • learning disabilities (grades K-12)
  • Teacher coordinator of work-based learning
