WPLC Spring Program

The WPLC spring program on April 17, 2012 featured Professor Hee Yun Lee, 2010-11 Rising Star faculty award winner, and Dr. Kara Coffino, 2008-09 graduate student award winner. Professor Lee and Dr. Coffino shared stories about the work they’re doing and their experiences as women leaders.

Courageous Leadership

The WPLC fall program featured CEHD alumna Dr. Melissa Krull, who recently completed her tenure as superintendent of the Eden Prairie School District. A courageous leader, Dr. Krull shared her insights on women's leadership and the challenges and lessons learned through her 28-year career in the district. Members and guests enjoyed her remarks and left inspired to live and lead more courageously.

WPLC Awards Celebration

The Circle held its annual awards celebration on June 15, 2011, at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul. Janet Heidinger, Circle steering committee chair, presided over the event. Upon receiving their awards, the recipients shared with Circle members, family, faculty advisors, and other guests information about their academic and personal goals. For a glimpse of the celebration see the photo gallery. These remarkable and inspiring women are the future leaders in education and human development and they join a long list of previous outstanding honorees. Hats Off to all of the honorees!

Investing in Teacher Quality

Dr. Misty Sato, Campbell Chair for Innovation in Teacher Development leads the college's Teacher Education Redesign Initiative(TERI) and on April 28, 2011, discussed changes to the teacher education curriculum, alternative teacher licensure, and other critical issues. TERI is funded by the Bush Foundation as part of its 10-year plan to improve student achievement in Minnesota and the Dakotas. Dr. Sato is also the recipient of the 2008 WPLC Rising Star award for pretenure faculty women.

A pebble in your purse: the ripple effect of philanthropy

Circle members and guests gathered on September 13, 2010, to explore how women's philanthropy impacts women's lives and the causes they support. National speaker, personal finance expert and author, Margaret May Damen, co-author of Women, Wealth, & Giving, shared with the group how time, talent, and treasures have enabled women of all ages to create ripples in the sea of charitable giving -- one pebble at a time.

WPLC Awards Celebration

The Women's Philanthropic Leadership Circle held its annual awards celebration on June 15 at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul to honor the 2010 WPLC award recipients. In addition, WPLC founding member Dr. Susan Hagstrum was recognized for her outstanding professional and volunteer leadership with the inaugural WPLC Founders Award. A breakfast buffet was served. 

Women's Leadership in Public Service

On November 10, 2009, the WPLC sponsored a panel discussion on Women’s Leadership in Public Service featuring distinguished women who work in government, education, and industry. The panel members included Regent Linda Cohen, Representative Mindy Greiling, Senator Patricia Torres Ray, and Kate Rubin. These women leaders talked about their commitment to making a difference in their respective professions and volunteer work, the struggles they faced in reaching their goals, and the satisfaction and enjoyment of working to solve problems and creating a better world.
