M.Ed./initial licensure in Early Childhood Education

(Minnesota state licensure in early childhood education)

This program prepares outstanding teachers of young children who have a strong foundation in child development theory and research and developmentally appropriate methodology for teaching within the early childhood years (birth – age 8.). The program is offered through the Institute of Child Development, recognized as a premier center for child study and research, in collaboration with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Hands-on experiences in the Shirley G. Moore Laboratory School and in local urban/suburban public schools create a strong experience base in which to apply the principles and methods learned in University courses.

Emphasis is placed on understanding individual learners, working with diverse learners, using a variety of instructional strategies, inclusive programming for children with and without special needs, working closely with families, creating positive classroom communities, all forms of professional writing and lesson planning, authentic assessment, documentation of student learning, reflective practice, professional development, and ethics.

Important note: This is an initial licensure program that is designed for teachers pursuing their first Minnesota teaching license. Individuals who already hold a Minnesota teaching license may not obtain a second license via an initial licensure program according to state rules. Please see our Additional Licensure program for information about options to add an ECE license.
