Membership Information
Our members come together from many backgrounds to collaborate and conduct research at our center. University departments involved in the CNBD include the Departments of Pediatrics, Neuroscience, Psychology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Educational Psychology, Kinesiology, the Medical School, the School of Nursing, and the Institute of Child Development. In evaluating candidates for membership, we will look for evidence that the individual is productive in research and that this research is related to the objectives of the Center. Several levels of membership are possible, including:
Core Faculty Membership
Faculty Membership
Associate Membership
Affiliate Membership
Postdoctoral Membership
Graduate Student Membership
Application
*If you would like to apply for membership to the CNBD,
please submit required membership materials to CNBD staff at
cnbd@umn.edu.
*Questions concerning CNBD Membership can also be directed to CNBD staff
at cnbd@umn.edu or 624-5600.
Core Faculty Membership
The core faculty members of the Center comprise its governing body. Core faculty will be Ph.D.’s or M.D.’s employed at the University of Minnesota. Core faculty are expected to participate in the following:
* Regular attendance at Center seminars and research symposia

to professional careers (scientific ethics, teaching, grant-writing, etc.)
* Serve on at least one Center committee each year
The Center’s core faculty members will be asked to submit a curriculum vitae and short statement of research activities yearly.
Current core faculty members of the Center are:
Michael K. Georgieff, M.D.
Jonathan Gewirtz, Ph.D.

Faculty Membership
Faculty members are expected to contribute to the Center in much the same
way as core faculty members do, but they are not part of the Center’s governing
body. Faculty members of the Center will be Ph.D.’s or M.D.’s employed at
the University of Minnesota who collaborate with one or more of the Center’s
core faculty. It is expected that faculty members will conduct research
that is applicable to the aims of the Center, involving neuroscientific
and behavioral approaches to an understanding of child development. Faculty
members are expected to participate in the following:
* Regular attendance at Center seminars and research symposia
* Specialized and interdisciplinary research in Center laboratories
* Optional involvement with formal outside colloquium speakers, including
preparation sessions and informal discussion hours with visiting scholars
* Training meetings which seek to provide familiarity with activities important

* Serve on at least one Center committee each year
Individuals to be considered for Faculty Membership must submit the following materials for nomination:
1. A curriculum vitae
2. A letter of endorsement from a core faculty member of the Center
Associate Membership
Associate members are non-faculty members heavily involved in CNBD supported protocols and activities involving the Center, such as committees and colloquia.
Associate members will be nominated by the Membership committee and an election decision will be made by the Membership Committee Chair. Typically, nominations are extended to affiliate members of the Center with an increased level of involvement.
Affiliate Membership
Affiliates are people with substantive interests in the topics of research of the Center. Affiliate members may be:
* Faculty at the University of Minnesota who wish to participate selectively
in Center activities but who have limited time, interest, or research programs
*Faculty potentially eligible for full faculty membership who wish to “try
out” the mutual benefits of Center participation
* Faculty visiting the University of Minnesota and faculty from area institutions
who wish to participate in Center activities
* Individuals from the outside community who participate in Center-related
research and who wish to participate in Center activities
Obligations of affiliate members include participation in, or attendance at some Center activities as well as responding to requests for information.
Affiliate Member benefits extend to participation in the Center’s annual orientation on the same basis as other members. Affiliates will receive notification of Center events and are welcome to attend. They may also utilize available research equipment and Center space for short periods of time. The Center can meet only a few affiliate requests for use of facilities and services due to the Center’s priority guidelines and budget limitations.
Individuals to be considered for Affiliate Membership must submit the following materials for nomination:
1. A curriculum vitae
2. A letter of endorsement from a core faculty member of the Center
3. A letter of endorsement from a member of your department or employment
organization.
Postdoctoral Membership
Postdoctoral affiliates must have a Ph.D. or recent M.D. in a field of importance and interest to the Center. Sponsorship by their postdoctoral supervisor and a faculty member associated with the Center is also required.
Postdoctoral members are invited to participate in all Center programs and are welcome to attend all advertised events. They may also check out available equipment and Center space for short periods. The Center can meet only a few postdoctoral affiliate requests for use of facilities and services, due to the Center’s priority guidelines and budget limitations.
Postdoctoral members are expected to:
* Participate on Center committees
* Contribute to training and research activities
* Participate in all basic Center functions (colloquia, retreats, special
conferences)
* When requested, contribute materials for research, training, grant renewals,
continuation grants, and progress reports
Individuals to be considered for postdoctoral membership status must submit the following materials for nomination:
1. A curriculum vitae
2. A letter of endorsement by a core faculty member of the Center
3. A letter of endorsement by the candidate’s postdoctoral supervisor.
Graduate Student Membership
The Center actively welcomes participation by graduate students, who may be predoctoral candidates in any University department. They must be sponsored by their department and a faculty member associated with the Center.
We are committed to training a new generation of researchers who will become tomorrow's pioneers in the field of child health and development. Over 25 graduate students and medical fellows collaborate with faculty members from a variety of fields, including child psychology, pediatrics and neuroscience.
Graduate students who wish to be members of the Center must be involved with training and research in an area of interest to the Center. They may participate in all Center programs—orientation, colloquia, training meetings, research group meetings, and informal discussions. The Center can meet only a few graduate student affiliate requests for use of facilities and services due to the Center’s priority guidelines and budget limitations.
Graduate student members are expected to:
* Be actively involved in at least one Center-related research
project
* Work on at least one Center committee each year.
* Contribute to training and research activities
* Participate in basic Center functions—colloquia, retreats, special
