As a certified child life specialist, I have dedicated much of my career to helping children cope with the stress of illness, injury, disability and hospitalization. With eight years of clinical experience at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, I have focused on the psychosocial and developmental needs of children, collaborating with families and health care professionals to facilitate effective coping in the health care environment.
With a strong educational background in child development, child life specialists promote coping through play, therapeutic activities, procedural support, and age-appropriate medical preparation and education. As advocates of patient- and family-centered care, child life specialists work in partnership with all members of the medical team to meet the unique emotional, developmental and cultural needs of each child and family.
I currently teach a special topics course on child life theory and practice, and as an alumna of ICD’s undergraduate child psychology program, I look forward to serving as a resource for students interested in the child life profession.
