Application & Admissions to the Graduate Program
in the School of Kinesiology

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. All materials are submitted electronically via the ApplyYourself application system. Admissions decisions are communicated to applicants using this system.

An admission decision notice will be emailed to you once your application is carefully reviewed by the School’s admission committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by University officials. You can expect a decision by mid- March or early April.

Admissions

M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree. It is preferred that Ph.D. applicants have completed a master's degree before entering the program. M.S. and M.A. applicants should have achieved at least a 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale in their undergraduate work, and Ph.D. applicants should have achieved at least a 3.5 overall GPA in their master's work.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores are required for admission.
PLEASE NOTE: Preferred minimum GRE scores for the new GRE administered after July 31, 2011, are as follows: 153 (Verbal), 153 (Quantitative). For the GRE taken before August 1, 2011, a score of at least 500 on the verbal section and 680 on the quantitative section is preferred. The GRE must have been taken no more than five years before applying to the program. The General Test Department code is 3909; University of Minnesota code is 6874. The GRE Subject Test is not required.

Students whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from the TOEFL. Internet-based scores must be a minimum of 79, with a minimum score of 21 on the writing section and 19 on the reading section. International students who will have completed 16 semester (24 quarter) credits in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher education in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota are exempt from this requirement.

Please note that in general we admit graduate students for fall semester only. Only under unusual circumstances will students be allowed to begin their studies at another time during the academic year.

Deadlines

December 15 is the application deadline. Applications received by December 15 will be given priority consideration for admission and financial support. Applications received after December 15 will be considered on a space/funds availability basis.

All application materials, including transcripts, are to be submitted directly to the ApplyYourself admissions system. We cannot review your application until ALL of the materials listed below are submitted successfully. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to ApplyYourself for this application process. If you are accepted into the program, you will need to then provide the University with official transcripts.

11. Program Supplementary Information: Upload the following: Kinesiology program application (see below); writing sample, such as an excerpt from a term paper or research paper for publication to demonstrate your academic writing ability (no more than five pages in English); description of research or work experience; resume or CV; unofficial copies of GRE/TOEFL scores; other credentials if applicable.
