Areas of specialization/research interests
Matt Vollum joined the U of M’s Kinesiology department in 2010 as the coordinator of the initial teacher licensure program for physical education and health. While coordinating the program, Matt stresses a research-based approach to providing lifelong physical activity and healthy decision-making. Students who graduate from the physical education and health licensure program will be prepared to provide a comprehensive, empowering and fun physical education and health curriculum to the youth in our ever-evolving world. Matt’s research interests revolve around barriers to lifelong physical activity such as self-efficacy and enjoyment.
After teaching physical education for 13 years in the Bloomington School District, Matt entered the University of Minnesota’s PhD program in the area of sport sociology in 2009. Matt is interested in the media’s portrayal of violence in sport and specifically how the increasing prevalence of social media influences the consumption of violence by society.
