Exercise Intervention for Preventing Perinatal Depression Among Low Income Women

Funding Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA; R40 MC29454)

Principal Investigator: Beth Lewis, Ph.D.

Healthy Mom 3 evaluates the efficacy of an exercise program designed to decrease perinatal depression and improve weight status among low income pregnant women. Participants who are less than 20 weeks pregnant (n=200) are randomized to either a telephone-based exercise intervention lasting through three months postpartum or usual care. Participants are recruited directly from federally qualified health centers serving low-income families. Dependent variables include depression, stress, sleep, and weight. Recruitment for this trial is ongoing.
