Recently, Pope et al. will present a research abstract titled “Validity of Smartwatches in Assessing Energy Expenditure and Heart Rate” at the 2017 Society of Health and Physical Educators national conference. The purpose of this study was to evaluated the validity and reliability of Apple Watch, Fitbit Surge HR, TomTom Multisport Cardio Watch, and Microsoft Band in the assessment of energy expenditure, average heart rate, and peak heart rate during exergaming (active video game) play. The study found that smartwatch energy expenditure measurements as the least valid and reliable. The most valid and reliable measurements overall came from the Apple Watch. More investigation into the validation of smartwatches in other regular daily activities is warranted.
