Caren Arbeit

Caren Arbeit

Caren is a doctoral student in the Sociology Department, with a minor in Education Sciences. Her research interests include educational stratification; transitions, particularly from high school to college and out of education; post-secondary education; social policy and demography. She is currently working on measuring student growth in elementary school by school type, and examining the impact of the recession on the transition out of education and into the labor market. Working with Peter Wruck and John Robert Warren, they are examining the blurry line between high school and college as AP course taking and remedial coursework in college have increased. Caren has also worked as an RA for Eric Grodsky and Rob Warren (along with their collaborators, Stefanie Deluca and Regina Del- Amen).

Prior to attending the University of Minnesota, Caren earned her BA in Sociology from Skidmore College, and her MA in Sociology of Education from New York University. She worked for Springboard Schools (now Pivot Learning Partners) as a Research Associate. While at Springboard Schools, Caren studied high performing, high poverty middle grades and high schools in California as part of a best practice study. She also collaborated with coaches to teach district leadership how to understand student achievement data.
