Network: STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)

The focus of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) network is to explore mechanisms to enlarge the pipeline of students engaged in advanced STEM coursework and careers. The network includes faculty and staff from the multiple disciplines of science, mathematics, and engineering, informal education, educational policy and education as sources for research and strategies that will enable schools and teachers to generate both the motivation and appropriate STEM education for both K-12 and college students. As a network we are addressing the following broad goals:

  1. Increasing students' interest, participation, and success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, particularly women and minorities in STEM courses.
  2. Developing curriculum and assessments for STEM courses that reflect problem-solving rather than factual recall.
  3. Attracting, recruiting and retaining highly qualified K-12 STEM teachers.
  4. Improving undergraduate STEM education to address multiple learning styles and interests and to produce a scientifically literate citizenry, as well as addressing the STEM needs of business and industry.
