Mahtomedi Schools Engineering Leadership Program

By adapting best practices in engineering education and integrating engineering into science and mathematics classrooms as well as embedding engineering across school curriculum, the Mahtomedi Engineering Leadership Program will deliver high quality STEM education instruction to all students, and it will become a model to other schools and districts as a way to build STEM achievement and encourage underrepresented populations to pursue STEM as a career. The Mahtomedi Engineering Leadership Program will support active partnerships with business, academia and the community. The program will support students with a focus on inquiry-based, contextual learning with flexible and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning.

Presenters: Kathe Nickleby, director of engineering and assistant principal of Mahtomedi High School, will be joining us to talk about Mahtomedi's vision and implementation of their vision of engineering for all students. Mahtomedi school district superintendent, Dr. Wolak and former St. Paul schools superintendent, Dr. David Bennett plan to also be available at the presentation.

Mission statement: The Mahtomedi Engineering Leadership Program will provide opportunities for a well-rounded education with emphasis on creativity, science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to prepare students for leadership in the 21st century.

Goals

  • Grow the interest of students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
  • Create more opportunities for students to apply math and science knowledge and skills in problem-based learning.
  • Provide advanced engineering courses and internship opportunities and enable students to earn college credit while in high school.
  • Respond to Mahtomedi’s mission and vision statement.
  • Stabilize enrollment.
  • Improve the quality of education in Mahtomedi schools.

Presentation location: Room 215 in Peik Hall on March 5, 2008 from 1-2:30 PM. RSVP by March 1.
