In this special issue of the NWSA Journal,
Lourdes Torres and Lorena García explore the subject of Latina
sexualities, a subject, they explain, that has been often "pathologiz[ed]
and racializ[ed]" in scholarly discourse. From the editors'
introduction:
"The limited research on Latina
sexualities that does exist, for the most part, continues to perpetuate
long-standing stereotypes and assumptions such as the virgin-whore
dichotomy which defines femininity as intrinsically dangerous and
produces a set of restrictive extremes."

Articles ranging from Marysol Asencio's exploration of Puerto Rican
lesbians to Xuan Santos's study of Chicana tattooing to Sonia
Báez-Hernández's
inquiry into disembodiment and breast
cancer seek to investigate the diverse challenges, difficulties,
and triumphs of Latina sexuality today. Jillian Hernandez looks into the
"chonga" girl aesthetic and Franicsca Angulo-Olaiz examines the role of
pap smears in love relationships. Finally, Anahi Russo Garrido explores
el ambiente as it relates to Latinas and Rosario Carrillo
follows the inspiration of vieja argüenteras
and the ways in which they negotiate their identities, and their
sexuality, through community in a foreign land.
Latina sexuality is a complex, often understudied subject expertly
captained in this issue by Lourdes Torres and
Lorena García. Ending with book reviews that specifically speak to the
Latina experience, this issue informs, explores, and provokes,
and asks its readers to continue the investigation and publication of
this rich and varied topic.
