Readmission to Graduate Degree Programs (Ph.D., Ed.D, & M.A.)
Readmission
To remain an "active" graduate student at the University of Minnesota students must register for at least one credit every fall and spring term.
Applications
Once "inactive", a student must apply for readmission by completing a department readmission form [WORD] and apply via the online Graduate School readmission application.
Decisions for readmission are based on a review of previous progress toward degree completion, the plan of each student, the timeline for completion, and the availability of faculty resources. Individual programs reserve the right to readmit students under the current graduate program handbook requirements and guidelines.
Students originally admitted under the WCFE program should reapply to the WHRE program.
Graduate School Readmission
Detailed instructions, fees, deadlines, and contact information are available via the online Graduate School readmission application page.
If you are readmitted, you must register the term you are accepted for readmission (including summer readmits). To avoid repeating the readmission process, be sure to register for at least one credit every fall and spring term.
Please note that doctoral students cannot register for any thesis credits until the next available registration period after passing the oral prelim exam. If students have not yet completed the oral prelim, have completed all course work but need to stay active, students can register for a pre-thesis credit, OLPD 8666.These pre-thesis credits are not graded, do not require class work and are not counted in the program (but, students do pay tuition).
After passing the prelim oral, doctoral students can register for thesis credits under OLPD 8888. While 24 thesis credits are required, all credits cannot be taken the same semester. Thesis credits must be taken over a period of at least two terms (fall and spring semester, summer and spring/fall). The oral prelim and thesis credits cannot be taken in the same term (unless the oral prelim is completed before the registration deadline for that term).
