EDPA M.A.: Higher Education (HiEd) Track
Overview
The master of arts (M.A.) degree in educational policy and administration with a program track in higher education (HIEd), administered by the Graduate School and offered by the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD), provides an opportunity for intensive study of the policies and organizational issues in higher education institutions and systems.
HiEd focuses on the experiences, practices, and decisions of those involved in post-secondary education, as well as on the sociopolitical contexts in which higher education exists. Areas of specialization include administration and organization, policy, college students, external relations, equity-oriented change, and research integrity.
Who enrolls in this program?
Students enrolled in higher education are the future leaders, university
administrators, educators, policy analysts and researchers in the field
of higher education. The program is selective and
is limited to 25 students each year. All new students begin the program in the fall
semester.
What will my program look like?
The M.A. requires that students take at least 34 credits (Plan A) or 30
credits (Plan B) of coursework. Typically, a course that meets once a
week throughout the semester is three credits. Students may complete the
course work on either a full-time or part-time basis.
What is the difference between Plan A and Plan B?
Plan A requires a thesis that represents original scholarship, while
Plan B requires an extensive paper focusing on an area of the students'
interest. Please communicate with program faculty to determine which
program is best for your professional goals.
How long will my M.A. program take?
Many students are employed full time and spread their course work over 2
years (including summers). M.A. students must
successfully complete their course work, Plan B paper or final oral
examination to receive their degree. All degree
requirements must be completed within seven years after starting the
program including any previous coursework that may be transferred into
the program.
