2017 Student Research Conference:
Bridging Theory and Practice

Saturday, February 25, 2017
9:00 am to 4:00 pm (Doors open at 8:00 am for registration and complimentary continental breakfast)
Humphrey School Conference Center, West Bank campus

Purpose

The goal of the conference is to highlight both undergraduate and graduate student work related to the latest research findings, best practices, and theoretical/conceptual developments within our department while replicating what you will encounter in your professional association conferences.

Conference Registration

Please fill out the online registration form if you plan on attending the conference. All attendees including presenters should register so that we can anticipate attendance and plan accordingly. There is no registration fee to attend the conference and lunch is provided. If you sign up and your plans change, please let us know.

Kenote Speaker: Dr. Emily Lilja Palmer

Dr. Palmer is a Minneapolis native and a product of the Minneapolis Public Schools. She is a University of Minnesota alumni with a B.A. in English, an
M.Ed. in Secondary Education, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration. She holds a teaching license in English 7-12 with a middle school endorsement, an administrative license K-12, and National Board Certification in EA/ELA. 

Dr. Palmer's doctoral dissertation was "Talking about Race: Overcoming Fear in the Process of Change." The research looked at schools with significant investment
(3+ years) in professional development in talking about race as a step toward decreasing racial achievement gaps. Findings included new grounded theory around the role of the principal in facilitating change for teachers. 

Dr. Palmer is in her 24th year as an educator, currently working as Principal of Sanford Middle School in Minneapolis. She also serves as President of the Minneapolis Secondary Principals Association.
