Study Abroad for Global Engagement

Instruments

The research design for SAGE study is a sequential mixed methods design (Creswell, 2009), comprised of a single, cross-sectional, online survey instrument administered to a large sample followed by a series of individual interviews with randomly selected survey respondents.

The instruments for both, quantitative and qualitative method are listed below.  Please review our recent publication, as well as the presentations at the various conferences for more details on the use of each instrument.  Additionally, please contact the research team on the email address listed at the bottom of this page with any questions.

Global Engagement Survey (GES)

The survey includes a total of 56 questions.  The questions focus on the five global engagement dependent variables, education abroad experience, education and career information, and on demographic information.

GES includes several branching questions, which are clearly marked in the provided copy of the survey.  Answers to these branching questions lead respondents to differing subsequent questions.

Interview Protocol

The purpose of the qualitative method was to explore the global engagement dimensions in greater depth, with a particular focus on the nature of participants’ later global commitments and the meaning of such experiences.

The interviews protocol is designed as a flexible protocol requiring an understanding of the participants’ responses to the quantitative instrument (GES).  The interviews represent an opportunity for the interviewees to provide illustrative narratives of their life experiences.
