This video clip shows a small section of Lesson 12 with a group of 4th graders. This is the students' first exposure to the chip model for fractions. They have already used paper folding strips to model fractions. Students are introduced to this new model by relating it to a familiar one. This is an example of a manipulative to manipulative translation. Notice how the teacher returns to the paper  folding model to help students who are struggling with the chip model.
