Program Officer Travel Grants

Face-to-face meetings with program officers are useful to researchers in building relationships, clarifying thematic priorities, discussing research ideas, and becoming familiar with agency and organization priorities. The Office of Research and Policy annually provides funding for CEHD faculty and P&A researchers to travel to visit an agency or foundation program officer to discuss grant or contract competitions. Funding up to $1,500 will be provided for round-trip airfare, 1-2 nights’ lodging, ground transportation, and per diem. Typically, up to four awards will be made each year.

The competition is open to any CEHD faculty member or P&A researcher currently holding Principal Investigator status and considered eligible to submit applications for external funding. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received an ORP program officer travel grant. We are especially interested in supporting those pursuing support from agencies or foundations new to them, as well as those traveling to speak with more than one program officer. While teams of researchers are invited to apply, they should select one representative as the traveler or provide strong justification for why more than one traveler is needed.

Successful applicants will clearly link their interests to an agency or foundation’s published priorities, identify thoughtful and specific questions they would like to explore with a program officer, and explain how the visit will advance their research agenda. All applicants are encouraged to read the following articles:

Some program officers prefer to work with applicants via e-mail, phone calls, and videoconferencing. Before applying, applicants should confirm that their program officer would welcome an in-person visit.
