UROP Info for Faculty & Staff

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) offers undergraduate students the opportunity to work with University of Minnesota faculty and research staff to complete research projects of interest to both the student and the faculty member.  UROP awards include a $1,400 stipend for the student and $300 for project-related expenses.  Within CEHD, the UROP program is coordinated by María C. Pabón, Coordinator for Undergraduate Education, in partnership with the Office of Research & Policy.

During and After the Award

How to access the student’s stipend and expense money

All UROP funds are handled through the faculty mentor's department. The award letter lists the contact person in that department. Contact this person to set up the payroll account, get time sheets and to access any approved expense money. The department will keep track of how many hours the student has worked but please encourage students to keep their own records as well.

If the student needs extra time

The start and end dates of your project were listed in the student’s award letter. If the student has not completed all project work and requirements and the end date is approaching, she/he will need to file an extension in order to stay current with the project. This should be filled out, signed by the mentor and returned to the UROP Office before the current ending date passes.

At the end of the project

Once the student has reached the end of the project, there are three ending requirements that must be completed in order for them to access the final $200 of their stipend and be considered done with the UROP award. These include a final report of approximately 3 pages, a completed evaluation form and some public presentation or publication of the results.
