Graduation

There are two graduation/recognition ceremonies in May for recent graduates and students who will complete all degree requirements by December 2018: the college's Commencement ceremony and the School of Social Work's recognition ceremony. Students may opt to participate the CEHD Commencement ceremony or the Social Work Student Recognition Ceremony, or both. RSVPs for CEHD Commencement and SSW Recognition Ceremony must be submitted separately.

CEHD Commencement

The CEHD graduate student commencement ceremony will be held Thursday, May 10, 2018, from 12:30-3:00 p.m. at 3M Arena at Mariucci. You must RSVP for this ceremony online. RSVP and other pertinent information.

Social Work Recognition Ceremony for Ph.D. and M.S.W. Students

The School of Social Work will host the Social Work Student Recognition Ceremony on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the Ted Mann Concert Hall, on the West Bank campus. The keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony is Dr. Pahoua K. Yang, Vice President, Community Mental Health and Wellness at the Wilder Foundation.

About the Recognition Ceremony

M.S.W. and Ph.D. degree candidates who plan to graduate by December 2018 are honored at this recognition ceremony. While this is not an official University commencement event, there is a presentation of degree candidates. A light reception for degree candidates and their guests is held immediately afterward in the lobby of the Ted Mann Concert Hall. The ceremony and reception are scheduled from 4–6 p.m.

Most students wear caps, gowns, and degree hoods at the ceremony. Caps & gowns may be obtained at the University Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union or at St. Paul Student Center, and online. For more information, please visit the Bookstore's website.

There is no limit to the number of guests students can invite and tickets are not required for entrance to the ceremony. You are not required to participate at the ceremony to graduate.

Eligibility Requirements for Participation

M.S.W. and Ph.D. students who will complete all degree requirements by December 31, 2018, are eligible to participate in the ceremony. Students must RSVP to attend.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Attending the ceremony does not mean that you have successfully completed the M.S.W. or Ph.D. degree. Degrees (diplomas) are conferred only after completion of all requirements and only if a student has applied for graduation with OneStop. Students will receive confirmation of their eligibility to participate as we get closer to May.

RSVP for the Ceremony by April 15, 2018

Please have the following information ready when you fill out the RSVP form:

  • Total number of guests you are inviting—there is no limit to how many people you can invite. We collect this information so we order enough refreshments.
  • Number of people who will hood you on stage—you may ask a family member, friend, or faculty member to hood you. Some students have multiple people join them on stage. We take this information into account when arranging the stage, and it also may impact seating in the auditorium.
  • Your Parting Words, if desired, for the ceremony program—each student may include a brief note to thank the people who supported them. See the 2017 program for examples of Parting Words.
  • Whether you or your guests require special accommodations (i.e., wheelchair access, sign-language interpreter, etc.)

RSVP.

Be sure to respond by April 15.
