New YDL Summer Institute

June 10-30, 2012

All students are welcome in the YDL Summer Institute:

Overview of the Program

The Youth Development Master’s Program at the University of Minnesota has been delivering high quality education for 19 years. This year we are pleased to offer a new option to complete the YDL Master’s degree. This option allows those students who cannot attend weekly classes in person during the school year to complete the master's degree through two intensive three-week summer sessions combined with online coursework during the fall and spring semesters. First, students attend our Summer Institute. After completing coursework online during the fall and spring semesters, students return to campus for a second three-week summer intensive to complete their coursework. Please see the overview of the program for a description of the courses that make up the 30 credits required to complete the YDL degree.

** We welcome any University of Minnesota graduate level students who may want to take any or all of the three courses offered during the Summer Institute.

Courses offered through the Summer Institute:

Core Curriculum

There are four main core courses required for YDL students. They include: The Everyday Lives of Youth, Experiential Learning: Theory & Practice, Organizational Approaches to Youth Development and Community: Context for Youth Development Leadership. The YDL pedagogy derives from and embodies the key aspects of the progressive learning tradition in the United States: good teaching combines and blends experience and knowledge, practice and ideas. The program pedagogy and the faculty-student relationships generate an ethos of spirit that drives the YDL program.

Electives

Electives provide the opportunity to dig deeper into existing work related interests or to explore new avenues of practice. Ten credits of elective coursework are selected from graduate level courses offered anywhere in the university. Some students choose electives to broaden their scope and knowledge; others use their elective credits to develop an area of specialization.

For motivated students who take advantage of the wealth of resources available in a research university environment, there are opportunities for fascinating and singular experiences, a counterpart to the shared cohort experience. The faculty encourages a wide variety of electives to build expertise in individual areas of interest.

As a YDL Summer Institute student you can choose to take any university 5000 level online course as an elective towards your program. All 10 elective credits can be taken this way. If you live in the Twin Cities area and want to take electives in the face to face classroom format you can complete your electives this way or any combination of face to face and online courses as long as you complete 10 credits during the program

Seminars

The purpose of the seminar is to provide you with the opportunity for self-directed learning. Seminars allow you to pick a topic that you are interested in and explore it in a way that works best for you. Topics of past seminars have varied completely according to people’s interests and passions. Past topics have been included: working with culturally diverse youth, spirituality and youthwork, evaluation, guiding girls, racism and white privilege, glbt youth, reading circles and many more. Please link to the seminar site for more information about seminars and the seminar proposal form.

Housing

For out of town students who choose to stay on campus during the summer institute there are accommodations located two blocks from Peters Hall. Bailey Residence Hall is located directly behind the St. Paul Student Center where a number of dining options are available. The cost of a single room in Bailey is $41.90 per night. Double rooms are also available to share at $31.45 per night per person. Please link to housing to see Bailey Hall and a list of amenities.
