About the U of M, Twin Cities Campus

The University of Minnesota ranks among the top 20 universities in the United States. It is both a state land-grant university and a major research institution. The University has a strong tradition of education and public service with scholars of national and international reputation.

Founded in 1851, the University of Minnesota has four campuses — the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul), Duluth, Morris, and Crookston — a collaborative center in Rochester [home of the world-famous Mayo Clinic], extension offices, and research and outreach centers throughout the state.

The Twin Cities campus encompasses two separate sites. The Minneapolis campus is set along the banks of the Mississippi River with state-of-the-art facilities and stately historic buildings. The St. Paul campus is set in rolling hills and green fields and is home to departments from 4 of the University's 20 colleges including the School of Social Work.

Library resources

The University Libraries system is the 17th largest in North America, lending more books and journal articles to other libraries than any other academic library in the nation. The Elmer Anderson Social Welfare History Archives is of particular interest to students of Social Work. Its state-of-the-art facility houses eight University special collections and archives units.

Technology to enhance learning

Teaching and learning at the University of Minnesota are defined by vast technology resources. Unique interdisciplinary studies and world-renowned professors and researchers contribute new knowledge while inspiring and preparing the next generation of leaders.

Use of WebCT, a classroom management and electronic authoring tool that expedites learning, has grown significantly over the past few years. The School's pioneering efforts in using emerging technologies such as interactive television and Internet support to deliver professional social work education have received national recognition.

Student, faculty and staff multicultural distinctiveness

The University strives to create a campus environment that values and actively supports an inclusive and diverse community. People with diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds; women; people with disabilities; people of all sexual orientations, gender identifications, or gender expressions; and people from diverse social and economic groups are able to thrive and achieve their full potential.

The School of Social Work student body is comprised of approximately 20-22% minority students. Our faculty and staff are approximately 18% minority.

On-Campus Museums/Galleries

The Twin Cities offers many museums and art galleries, some of which are located on the two campuses:

The Fredrick R. Weisman Art Museum, the Bell Museum of Natural History, the Goldstein Gallery (costume, clothing, and wearable art), the Raptor Center, the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, the Larson Gallery, St. Paul Student Center, the Katherine E. Nash Art Gallery, and the Kerlan Collection of Children's Literature.
