May 2012
- Einat Peled, Associate Professor at the Bob Shappell School of Social Work, Tel Aviv University, spoke on Mothering and Prostitution at the Minneapolis City Attorney's Office on May 15, 2012. The talk was co-sponsored by the Domestic Abuse Project and the School of Social Work. See flyer.
April 2012
- Dean Imho Bae, a graduate of our Ph.D. program and a college dean in South Korea, received the 2011 UMN's
Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals on Wednesday, April 11th. A symposium on Peacebuilding through Restorative Dialogue took place in 5 Peters Hall from 3pm to 4:30pm and included Dean Bae, Jennifer Blevins, and representatives of the Native American and Somali communities. At 4:30pm we honored Dean Bae with his award in the Peters Hall Atrium and he gave a brief talk on People-to-People Dialogue that he developed for peace building between North and South Korea. He is pictured receiving the Award from Dean Meredith McQuaid. See flyer.
March 2012
- Mark Boother from the UK on Setting Targets and Measuring Outcomes. Mark Boother of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Probation will speak on efforts in the United Kingdome to evaluate practices. He will speak at Noon on Wednesday, March 7th, in Room 80 Peters Hall. See flyer for more information.
- Posters of research supported through child welfare funding will be presented again this year by our faculty and graduate students at the 119th annual MSSA Conference March 13-16 in Minneapolis. Look for the SSW booth with rotating posters throughout the conference.
- Selected faculty, staff and student posters will also be on display at the College of Education & Human Development's annual Research Day to be held on Tuesday, May 20th, from 11am to 1pm at the McNamara Alumni Center atrium.
- Laurel Bidwell on High Fidelity: It's not just for the music world. The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare project coordinator, Dr. Laurel Bidwell, will present results from CASCW's multi-year study of family assessments in Ramsey County's child welfare system on Wednesday, March 21st, from Noon to 1pm. - Wednesday, February 22nd. Prof. Valerie Tiberius spoke on "Well being and Values: Through a Philosopher's Eyes". Prof. Tiberius teaches in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota. See attached flyer for more information.

- Child Welfare and Development: A Japanese Case Study
Wednesday, September 14, Noon-1 p.m., Room 280, Peters Hall
Featuring: Professor Wendy Haight, Gamble-Skogmo Chair, School of Social Work. This talk described a program of research examining the everyday experiences and perspectives of maltreated children living in Japanese state care, their caregivers and service providers through the theoretical lens of cultural developmental psychology. - Community Based Participatory Research in Social Work. This workshop introduced students, faculty, social work practitioners and community members to the basics of community based participatory research methods. A CBPR practitioner panel presented four University of Minnesota School of Social Work/community CBPR projects:

- Dean Ngoh-Tiong Tan, School of Human Development and Social Services, SIM University, Singapore, and a Ph.D. alumni of our SSW, will receive the University of Minnesota's Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals on Wednesday, March 23rd, at 3pm in Room A at the Campus Club. He will speak on his research on disaster response and a reception will follow. See flyer for more information.

- Assistant Professor Colleen Fisher spoke on Advancing Sexual Risk Assessment with Youth on Wednesday, September 22nd, at Noon. This presentation focused on a study which tests a new mixed method instrument designed to help young people at high risk for HIV/STI accurately recall risky behaviors while also facilitating positive behavior change. - Prof. Jacquelyn C. Campbell, Ph.D. is the Anna D. Wolf Chair and Professor of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She is an internationally recognized scholar on danger assessment and femicide. She met with faculty and doctoral students for a discussion of risk, danger and fatality assessment in intimate partner violence on Monday, September 20, 2010.

- Doctoral alumna Marilyn Peterson Armour was a keynote speaker at a forum on Forgiveness, Resiliency and Survivorship on April 28th at the Campus Club in Coffman Union. See flyer for more details.
- CEHD Research Day was held on Friday, April 9th, . SSW research projects along with those from the College were on display in poster format.
- Peter Pecora, Ph.D., is the Senior Director of Research Services at Casey Family Programs in Seattle. He joined an overflow crowd for a discussion of foster care research on April 15, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. See flyer for more details.

- Alankaar Sharma, Ph.D. candidate, spoke on How individual and societal notions of masculinity influence the abuse experiences of adult male survivors of child sexual abuse on Thursday, March 11th. See flyer.
- Minnesota Social Service Association Conference Poster Session. SSW faculty, staff and students will be mounting a special poster session showcasing Title IVe supported child welfare research and training projects. The Poster Session took place from 1:15pm to 3:15pm on Wednesday, March 24th, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Minneapolis and be open to conference participants.

- Dr. Patricia Shannon (SSW), Dr. Elizabeth Weiling (FSoS) and graduate students Jennifer Simmelink (SSW), Tomoko Ogasawara (FSoS) and Emily Becher (FSoS) spoke on Developing Culturally Informed Mental Health Screening for Minnesota's Refugees on Friday, November 20th. See flyer.

- Muhammad Haj-Yahia, Ph.D. ('91), was in Minnesota to receive the University of Minnesota's 2009 Distinguished Leadership for Internationals Award. He spoke on his research into family violence in the Arab communities of Israel and Palestine. See flyer.

- Prof. Jane Gilgun and Alankaar Sharma spoke on Intervention Research: What Works, for Whom, Under What Conditions from Noon to 1pm in Peters Hall. In this presentation, Professor Gilgun and Mr. Sharma will discuss methods of documenting the dynamics of social services. The purpose of such research is to shine light on what has been the black box of intervention effectiveness and ineffectiveness. The seminar is based on research they have conducted on a child and family intervention program that is part of Ramsey County Human Services and Public Health Departments. - Lum and Lee hosted conference on health and mental health literacy among immigrants and refugees on May 22nd. Assoc. Prof. Terry Lum and Assist. Prof. Hee Lee were two of the hosts for a conference on health and mental health literacy and its impacts on disparities in immigrant and refugee communities.

- Kerala's Model of Development. Father George Mutholil, a Jesuit priest who has taught at the Loyola Institute of Social Sciences in Trivandrum, Kerala and is now a visiting professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. Father George spoke on June 10th at noon.
- The Shared Journey: Chronic Illness and the Aging Family in the 21st Century. Prof. Victoria Raveis of Columbia University spoke on Tuesday, June 16th, about her research on families and aging.
