Congratulations!
The 2009 Commencement Ceremony will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at Northrop Memorial Auditorium.
No tickets are required. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Auditorium doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
If you applied for graduation by April 20, your name will automatically be listed in the commencement program booklet. Due to printing deadlines, your name will not be listed in the booklet if you did not apply for graduation by April 20. If you apply for graduation and RSVP online by Friday, May 8 you may participate in the commencement ceremony.

Instructions for graduates
Check in
Please report promptly at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2009 to Coffman Memorial Union, Mississippi Room. You will need to check-in, pick up your reader’s card, fill out the photographer’s card, and receive directions from a volunteer coordinator on where to line up for the procession. The procession from Coffman to Northrop Auditorium will begin 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony. Please leave coats and valuables with your guests as there will not be a secure place for you to leave them.
The entire ceremony will be approximately two hours.
In case of rain
Undergraduate degree candidates report to the rear basement corridor, Room 5, of Northrop. Graduate degree candidates will report to the rear basement corridor, Room 4, of Northrop. You will need to check-in, pick up your reader’s card, fill out the photographer’s card, and receive instructions for the evening. Please check in with the volunteer coordinator as soon as you enter the room. It is very important that you arrive on time (6:00 p.m.) and report directly to your rooms. Only candidates for degree will be allowed access to Rooms 4 and 5. Please leave coats and valuables with your guests as there will not be a secure place for you to leave them.
Disability accommodations
- Elevator is located on the east end of Northrop (near entrance);
- Seating Space is available for wheel chairs in the east section of the auditorium, both on the main level and the balcony level - please ask ushers for directions;
- There will be a signer on the stage;
- Northrop is handicap accessible.
Directions & parking
Parking will be available at several location including: East River Road Garage, Church Street Garage and Weisman Art Museum.
Individuals who require special parking should contact Parking and Transportation Services.
Photographs
Due to strict fire codes, no wires or equipment will be allowed to run across or block aisles in Northrop Auditorium. Guests are restricted to hand held portable video units only please.
Family members and friends are encouraged to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony. For your convenience, we have made arrangements with Chappell Studio for a professional photographer to record the moment you are awarded your congratulatory certificate.
You will receive a free proof of this photo in the mail within 6 days following the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase.

Reception at Eastcliff
You, a guest, and your family are cordially invited to a graduation reception with music and refreshments at Eastcliff, official residence of University presidents.

M.Ed. students should wear hoods to the ceremony. Hoods are part of M.Ed. commencement apparel and are available at University of Minnesota Bookstores. Undergraduates don’t wear hoods.
