Applicants who are seeking licensure in the early childhood special education (ECSE) specialization area must apply to the M.Ed./ILP program in ECE/ECSE.
Applicants who are seeking licensure in other special education specialization areas and who do not hold a valid Minnesota teaching license must complete additional coursework to qualify for an initial teaching license. This includes the following specialization areas: deaf or hard of hearing, development disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and learning disabilities.
Candidates who do not have a current Minnesota initial teaching license must complete Teaching License Exemption (TLE) requirements, which comply with the Minnesota Board of Teaching's exemption requirements. - For more information, contact the Department of Educational Psychology (612-626-0367 or sped-adm@umn.edu).
