M.Ed. Core Requirements
12 credits
- CI 5155—Contemporary Approaches to Instruction and Assessment (3 cr)
- CI 5177—Practical Research (3 cr) (to be taken toward end of program)
- CI 5186—School-Related Projects (3 cr) (To be taken after CI 5177; consult with faculty adviser.)

One course related to classroom uses of technology,
e.g., CI 5351—Technology Tools for Educators (3 cr)
or alternate course approved by advisor
(e.g., LgTT 5110 Technology in the Second Language Classroom)
SLC Requirements
12 credits
- CI 5651—Foundations of Second Languages and Cultures Education (3 cr)
- CI 5656—Reading and Writing in a Second Language (3 cr)
- CI 5662—Issues in Second Language Curriculum Design (3 cr)

One course on assessment:
CI 5642—The Assessment of Learners with Limited English Proficiency (3 cr)
[required for ESL teachers]OR
CI 5658—Second Language Testing and Assessment (3 cr)
[required for world language teachers]
Electives
6 credits
Students are encouraged to take additional SLC courses such as the following:
- CI 5657—Speaking and Listening in a Second Language (3 cr)
- CI 5646—Understanding and Teaching English Grammar (3 cr)
- CI 5647—Teaching Middle and Secondary Immigrant and Refugee Students with Limited Formal Schooling
- CARLA Summer Institutes
In addition, teachers of world languages are encouraged to take a course in the language they teach.
