What is TRiO?
Since 1976, the University of Minnesota's TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program, first in General College and now in the College of Education and Human Development, has provided academic development services for low- to modest-income first-generation college students and students with disabilities.
The goal of TRiO SSS is to retain, transfer, and graduate its participants.
Services offered
During their first academic year, TRiO SSS students receive the following services:
- academic support and advising
- financial aid counseling
- space reserved for TRiO students in weekly supplemental study classes attached to challenging college courses
- learning communities (students take the same courses as a group)
- leadership development, social events, and community service opportunities
Continuing students receive the same services, with emphasis on career planning, choosing a major, preparation for transfer, and accessing campus resources.
TRiO SSS program may also provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving federal Pell Grants.
Eligibility for program services
To be eligible to participate in SSS projects, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and
- be enrolled or accepted for admittance in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota;
- be low- to moderate-income and first-generation college students and/or students with disabilities;
