About me

Hello! My name is Anthony Albecker and I am originally from Chicago, IL. I received an M.A. in communications from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and a certificate in postsecondary developmental education from the University of Minnesota. In addition to advising, I teach academic success and introductory communication courses. I am in the process of exploring Ph.D. programs.

My professional and academic interests revolve around issues of access and retention of first-generation and underrepresented student populations in higher education (and across the educational spectrum for that matter). I feel it important to share that this passion is a result of being a first-generation college student and being in foster care. In addition to realizing these pursuits through advising and teaching, my recent professional presentations and publications are geared towards providing advisers and faculty tools to help students develop self-advocacy skills and on the concept of universal instructional design in higher education settings.

My hobbies outside of work include reading, sports (especially following Chicago teams), civic engagement, eating, and construction/woodworking.I play basketball, run marathons, bike and try to spend as much time around large bodies of water. Above all else, I enjoy hanging out with my beautiful wife, Julie, and my 16 month old daughter Ariana.

Finally, I LOVE to travel! My most recent long trip, in April/May 2009, was to South Africa for a site visit looking at the wide range of learning abroad opportunities for U of M students. I am firmly committed to promoting, referring, and assisting students to take advantage of learning abroad opportunities during their undergraduate studies.
