Tips for writing your application essay
The application essay gives opportunity to show how you are different from other applicants and provides information about you that your transcript alone cannot.
Start early.
Writing an application essay is not a simple task. Start early, and plan to spend a lot of time writing, reviewing, and polishing your essay.
Reveal yourself.
The essay is your opportunity to represent who “you” are to people who most likely do not know you personally. Be authentic. Let your genuine enthusiasm show through and demonstrate your passion for the major you are applying to. Be creative in your approach to answering the questions using vivid and specific details.
Showcase your writing skills.
Use your introduction to grab the reader’s attention early and explain why you are writing. The first sentence sets the tone for the essay and can draw the reader in. Use transitions between and within paragraphs to create a logical flow. End with a strong conclusion. It is your last chance to convey your message.
Answer the questions thoroughly and completely.
Be aware of the specific questions asked for the major you are applying to and be certain they are answered in your essay. Give examples and use experiences you have had to support your answers.
Revise, revise, and revise again.
Writing your essay is a process and it takes time. You will need to rewrite and edit your essay several times. Proofread your work for any typographical errors and have others read your essay and provide feedback.
Obtain help throughout the writing process.
Brainstorm and talk through the answers to your questions with family, friends, advisors, instructors, and counselors before writing. Be sure to have others provide feedback on content and grammar.
