Minors
Undergraduate minors demonstrate an interest in and an understanding of a focused area of study.
- Applied psychology in educational and community settings (APECS) – This 18-credit minor will allow you to apply psychological theory (systems-ecological, developmental, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral) to actual interpersonal, social, cultural, institutional, or economic contexts.
- Coaching – This 29-credit program is open to future teachers who also want to be school athletic coaches. Topics include human anatomy, injury prevention, motor development, and management of sport activities.
- Family social science – Students in this 16-credit program gain an understanding of families from several social science perspectives, including couple relationships, family systems, and diversity.
- Family violence prevention – This 15-credit program is for students interested in research and practical skills in family violence prevention. Courses address issues such as child abuse and neglect, adult domestic violence, elder abuse, and intergenerational abuse.
- Leadership – This 16-credit interdisciplinary program gives you skills and experience in teamwork and leadership in the personal, community, and global spheres. It is offered in collaboration with the college’s Department of Educational Policy and Administration, the University’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute, and the University's Office of Student Affairs.
- Social justice – This 18-credit program allows you to both theorize about the meanings of social justice, and practice doing social justice advocacy in community organizations. You will take part in service learning coursework that allows them hands-on experience in a variety of social and community settings.
- Youth studies – The 16-credit minor explores youth as an idea, as individuals, as an age group, and as a life stage. This interdisciplinary program builds on 30 years of work by the University's Center for Youth Development and youth studies program at the School of Social Work.
Certificate programs
These 12-credit programs offer a shorter course of study than a degree while providing a concentrated course of study in a subject area. Certificate coursework completed with undergraduate student status cannot be applied to graduate-level degree programs.
