Incoming freshmen and transfer students from Minnesota who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to enrolling will automatically be considered for the Founders Opportunity Program and other University-wide scholarships based on financial need.
Diversity Of Views & Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship

The fellowship is awarded to first-year students from under-represented groups. The fellowship provides a stipend, tuition and health insurance. Prospective students must be nominated by their program through procedures announced in the application. Prospective students should contact the Director of Graduate Studies in advance. The recipients of the DOVE Fellowship are encouraged to participate in the Community of Scholars Program (COSP).

Grants of up to $2,500 are available to support thesis research, such as domestic travel and expenses for fieldwork, postage, and photocopying. Deadlines: October 1 and March 1 (if deadline falls on a weekend, then the following Monday.)
Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

The purpose of the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (DDF) program is to give outstanding final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making timely progress toward the degree--typically those entering their final year of graduate study--an opportunity to complete the dissertation within the upcoming academic year by devoting full-time effort to the research and writing of the dissertation. Candidates must be nominated by their graduate program's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to an all-University competition. Up to 60 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are awarded annually.
Recipients of the fellowship, in 2007-2008, will receive a stipend of $21,500 for the academic year, plus full tuition for thesis credits. Eligible recipients are also covered by comprehensive health insurance, including subsidized dependent and dental care.
Instructions to nominees and application forms are available from the DGS in late fall.
The Sharon Doherty Award

The Sharon L. Doherty Award was established in 1993 to recognize outstanding effort by University of Minnesota students to positively impact the campus climate for women students.
Fellowships for research abroad

Applicants must be graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who wish to carry out research (preferably dissertation research) abroad.
Paulo Freire International Community Service Grant

The Learning Abroad Center, in partnership with the Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC), sponsors several students annually through grants of up to $2,000 that will allow them to create unique international experiences. This program is available only to registered University of Minnesota-Twin Cities undergraduate students who will return to the University to continue their undergraduate course work.
Josie R. Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice Award

The award seeks to honor one faculty or staff member and one student who, through their principles and practices, exemplify Dr. Johnson’s standard of excellence in creating respectful and inclusive living, learning, and working environments.

Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership

The Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership shall be given annually to graduate and professional students who display leadership and public engagement which is clearly "above and beyond" one's normal duties and responsibilities. The award shall be given to one graduate and one professional student and each receive a scholarship of $1000. Candidates must demonstrate dedication and assistance that benefit an individual, group or community, or strengthens a democratic way of life.
Carol E. MacPherson Memorial Scholarship and Minnesota Alumnae Society Scholarship

Applicants to the Carol E. MacPherson Memorial Scholarship and Minnesota Alumnae Society Scholarship must be at least 28 years of age by application deadline, returning after a five-year or longer break in obtaining a college/post-secondary education, and admissible to or enrolled in a degree-granting program at any University of Minnesota campus. Applicant selection is "weighted" by the following characteristics: first generation in family to attend college, first undergraduate degree, student parent status.
Eva O. Miller Fellowship

For graduate students in the broad areas of psychology or statistics and measurement. Students apply in one of two categories: 1) for students in the beginning stages of their graduate career (eligible students may apply in their first or second year of Graduate School, or 2) for students who are in the intermediate or advanced phase of their program at the time of application, usually in their third year or later. Up to three awards. Stipend: $18,000, plus tuition.

President's Student Leadership & Service Awards

This annual award recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of any outstanding student leaders at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students can be nominated by faculty, students or staff.
As part of this awards process, students may also be candidates for the 2007 University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) Student Leadership Awards, 2007 Donald R. Zander Award for Outstanding Student Leadership, and the 2007 Mary A. McEvoy Award for Public Service and Leadership. Each of these three awards is accompanied by a financial scholarship.

Shevlin Fellowship

Open to graduate students in the biological and agricultural sciences, basic physical and medical sciences, and liberal arts. Relevant graduate programs may nominate one candidate.
William W. Stout Fellowships

Applicants must be graduate students in the intermediate years of their Ph.D. program in humanities or social sciences (i.e., students currently in their second or third year of graduate study). Preference, therefore, will be given to those who will not have taken their oral prelims before the start of the fellowship. Relevant graduate programs may nominate one candidate.
The UNCF/University of Minnesota Graduate Fellowship
This partnership program supports Minnesota residents who have graduated from The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member institutions and who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees at the University of Minnesota. Selected fellows receive a graduate assistantship, tuition, and health insurance. Contact UNCF’s Twin Cites location at 612-338-5742.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

This program offers financial awards twice yearly to full time undergraduates for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special research projects. UROP applications are judged on both the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student; awards are not based on financial need. Applicants must be full-time (at least six credits per quarter) undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota.
University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) Student Leadership Awards

Eight undergraduate students will be selected to receive a $500 UMAA Student Leadership Award. Candidates for this award are selected from among the nominations for the President’s Student Leadership and Service award.
Thomas F. Wallace Fellowship

Torske Klubben Fellowship for Minnesota Residents

This fellowship award has been established to support outstanding graduate students (master's or Ph.D.) currently enrolled in any field in the University of Minnesota Graduate School. Applicants must have outstanding academic achievement, excellent leadership potential, and an interest in or connection with Norway. Must be official state of Minnesota residents. The stipend is $13,000 for the academic year, plus full tuition. Sponsored by the Torske Klubben of Minneapolis. Deadline: March 1 (if deadline falls on a weekend, then the following Monday).
Woman’s Club of Minnesota Fellowship

For graduate students (master's or Ph.D.) with high scholarship and leadership ability. Special consideration will be given to students who are planning to remain in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Must be a U.S. citizen. One award. Stipend: up to $5,000. Deadline: December 1 (if deadline falls on a weekend, then the following Monday).
Women Student Travel Grants

Priority for Women Student Travel Grants will be given to students attending national conferences, their first conference and/or presenting at a conference—conference presentation is a preferred requirement of graduate student applicants.
